Topic tags/keywords: question

I like to welcome new members, and each time I do, it adds to my number of post, which is now over 4000. To some this might look like I am a very active member making all of these great comments. If possible, I would like the number of post not shown for me. What do you other LumberJocks think, keep showing the post or do away with it? Or what?

Personally, I’d be glad to see them get rid of it. Some people are under the impression that active posters get a charge out of having a high post count next to their name. I know that isn’t true for me, and I’d be happy if I never had to get accused of that again.

I’d go for that and also take the option out for most active. Just make it that when you click on Jocks you go to the new members only. Get the popularity thing out of there.

I think its good for two reasons.

Credibility-I like it for that reason-You know when somebody has been around long enough to be credible. i.e. If somebody on their first post says they like the SAWSTOP, or a DREMEL such-n-such, you’d prolly b right to think SPAM. If it’s their 300th post, it prolly doesn’t matter, and they are simply stating an opinion. This is not 100% obviously, but I’ve seen it on this and other boards I frequent.

Also, it gives others a general idea of the newness of any given LJr so that when they make a no-no on a post , he doesn’t get his a$$ reamed as he probably should when he has 1500 posts under his belt.

My 2 cents.

I personally don’t see any use for it myself…..as long as YOU know when you joined, i.e., the post count doesn’t matter and don’t really mean anything…..I’m not after 40, 000 post..that’s just a number. As it is, I hardly ever look pay any attention to it…...People will know you for who you are…..not how many post you have.

Hmm Greg I think your wrong in that it would only take me a couple weeks to be at 10,000 posts so that would make me creditable. Correct. I think that some of the top jocks are here for advertising mainly. (no disrespect). Gives a false sense of who acually contributes to the forums and projects and blogs and who doesn’t.

@ Resurrected, how can Greg be wrong it is just an opinion. I think that if there is a guy posting 572 posts in 53 days I would say I would trust him far less than a guy that has 40,000 posts in 1000 days. Not that you are any less knowledgeable, it would be just a first impression. All in all though it really only maters if you are anal enough to care, I know I am so I like it. Either way this has been discussed so many times on here can’t anyone do some searches on here so we don’t have to relive these discussions over and over again.

same here.

I could give a f&%$ if I wrote 1 or 20,000 comments. Seems a stupid reward.

Maybe some folks think its like money in the bank, the more you have the greater the reward when in reality its wasted bandwidth. Another reminder of how I wasted a moment of my own time. : )

maybe its like “Facebook” in that, if you have 245,147,987 friends you get a prize?

maybe they should get a prize?

Ron:

I agree with Rick & Res. I don’t pay any attention to it. What I do look at is how many Days they’ve been on site and ALL that tells me is if they are a Newbie or a Veteran.

I just looked at my Postings and it surprised me a bit. However they are not “NIce Job” etc etc type of postings. They are usually Lenghty in Nature replying to somone who is asking for help, or something in a Forum that needs to have some length to it, to make any sense. Also with pictures if that will help.

ALL of the preceding paragraph pertaining to my Activities will be VERY Selective from now on. There are WAY to many on here that do NOT even follow their own Posts. If they do, they don’t even leave a “Thanks” for what obviously took a great deal of time to do, or ignore it completely. Then we have the PM’s I get, Long Answer, No Reply. No Thanks!!!

OR! Maybe My Postings just gets lost amidst all the 2/3/4 word Comments…guys probably looking for a “High # Post Count” so they can get on the “Most Active Jocks” Category.

Sorry Ron. Its been bugging me for a while now. If the Majority, or all of your Postings are Welcoming New Lumber Jocks, I see that as a Good Thing! I can also appreciate your “Modesty”.

Ah geeze I say one wrong word and I get nailed. OK wrong right or differnet perspective. You said it. Someone who is on here for 1 day can have 40 years experience. Which makes him a expert over the likes of the guy who is on LJs for so many years with a large count number.

Besides You don’t have a clue on my count or days on LJ other than the number you see.

Rick,

I’ll buy that for a dollar…..all I know is that I’ve been on here for nearly a year and a half, and I really don’t even care about that…just more numbers…..
And I agree with you about what you said about posters…Nothing aggrivates me more than for someone to post a project, blog, or forum topic, and you never hear from them again….No thanks, no replys back to say anything…..If I take the time to post an answer, then they can take the time to reply….if not, I’m done.
