Topic tags/keywords: hand tool projects

If you were limited to just hand tools and were starting out using hand tools, what project(s) would you start with and why?

Thanks for your ideas.

Small box with a hinged top. You’ll need all the tools and if it gets to hard you can simplify and still have a box when your done.

Betsy, that’s exactly where I am right now. The size of my shop (6×8) and my location (Malaysia) makes it impossible to get stationary power tools and inconvenient to get and use power hand tools. So I’m “unplugged” over here.

My first project (still underway, if you check my blog) is a dovetailed box for my wife. After that, the top of my to-do list are shop-related: saw bench, Japanese saw trestles, bench hook (western and Japanese), tool box/case and of course a workbench.

Unrelated to the shop, I’d like to make more boxes (maybe another small box, a toy box, etc), maybe a step stool (dovetailed, with a wedged-tenon support between the legs).

I agree, a small box.

You’d be surprised how much time a small box can take you. It’s a problem solver’s paradise. Or hell, as the case may be.
