I was wondering if anybody had seen a Stanley 78 that looks like this? I suspect it is a user modified rather that from the factory. it’s up for $70

I would suppose that tool was used A LOT by the owner what did the modifications. Wow. Never saw an infill No. 78 before. Wonder if the eye-bolt actually adjusts depth of cut / set on the iron?

I agree probably user modified. That looks like what that bolt is for, but I don’t see how it would maintain contact with the cutter through much of it’s travel given the bolt is at a different angle from the cutter.

You use the eyebolt to hang it off a cup hook.

Back when I was a carpenter, there were people I worked with over the years that did this to their tools. Why? ‘Cause they saw a way to make it work better for them. It would be interesting to know if the mods work.

Looks like somebody was in the shop unsupervised.
