Topic tags/keywords: question drill press scrollworking woodburning turning

Hey all, i am in need of some help, i got a craftsman drill press with only a 2 inch spindle length. i need to make it so that i can drill all the way thru a pen blank, i tried making my own jig, so that i can drill half way on one side, then flip the blank over to finish it out, but it always gets off center, anyone with an idea please help

thanks

Jim

Start the hole and drill into it about an inch or more. Stop the drill press and lift the blank (bit still in hole) and slide a 3/4”-1” board underneath, turn on drill press and finish drilling

Personally I can’t wait to upgrade my drillpress.

I use a Drill chuck for pens from Penn State. So your only limited by the travel of your quill. A little pricey but seems more accurate than the drill press to me. Just a thought.

If you are drilling pen blanks, you must have a lathe. You can get a drill press chuck that can be mounted in your tail stock. IMO, this is a very good way to drill pen blanks (and lots of other things). Of course, the drill remains stationary and the wood spins around it. This may be the best way to make certain you are going right down the center of the blank.
