Topic tags/keywords: jointer

I will soon be making my largest ever woodworking equipment purchase. I have the opportunity to get a new Powermatic 8” parallelogram jointer (2hp) for about 2000. including tax. I also know the Grizzly 8” parallelogram jointer (3hp, spiral cutterhead) is about 1500. It will be used in a growing woodworking business. Both are good brands, but I was wondering what those with experience would purchase if they had the opportunity. Honest opinions please!

I am currently faced with a similar decision on a 15” helical head planer. I’ve decided to go with a Jet rather than either the Grizzly or Powermatic. I feel the Jet is close to the PM in quality and it is intermediate in price between the two. Starting Friday for 4 days, PM is having a 10% off sale and Jet is going to be 15% off. That helps with the decision too. I’ll be placing my order Friday.

Ditto. You get what you pay for for the most part.

Unless something changed in the last few days grizzly don’t have any 8 in. Jointers. I ordered one back in May and it never came in, I finally cancelled it. I found a used 12 in. Grizzly last week and was going to buy it but the deal fell through. Finally I ordered a Steelex supposedly made by Shop Fox. It has a 2 year warranty and is said to be delivered Dec. 5th to 10th. It was 1150.00 and has the spiral cutterhead. I’ll just be glad to get one if I ever do. Been looking for awhile.

Gerald – That may be the deciding factor. Grizzly is always backordered, but I don’t know for how long. Powermatic is also backordered, but for only about 6 weeks.

I’m glad to hear someone else has bought one. I called factory outlet to check on them and was told that they were exactly the same as the shopfox and Grizzly. I Also was told that grizzly owned both companys. Why you can get shopfox and Steelex but not grizzly I can’t figure out, especially since Grizzly owns both companys. It really dosent matter as long as I get one, I like the 2 year warranty also.

Shopfox is Grizzly’s retail brand so they may try to keep more of them in stock so that they can keep the retailers happy. Not sure where Steelex sits in their business strategy but I’ve seen a few of their hand tools in the same local retailer that sells Shopfox.

bygrace,

I purchased the Powermatic PJ-882HH 8-Inch Parallelogram Jointer April 2016. It has the helical cutter head. Except for the helical cutter head, the jointer you are considering is likely the same machine. I am not doing production work, so the jointer has not seen the use I would guess it would in a production shop.

I have found it to be a well-built machine that produces flat faces and straight edges. I have also found that the helical cutters produce tear-out free results without regard to grain direction. Adjusting the beds requires removing the rabbeting ledge. A special offset wrench is required. Otherwise adjusting the tables coplanar is straightforward. Based on my experience I recommend the Powermatic jointer.

Since I have no experience with the Grizzly or Shop Fox jointers, I can offer no recommendation (positive or negative) for these machines.

Have your say...
