Topic tags/keywords: instrument harp commission music

Hi All,

I recently found the Lumber Jocks site and am floored by all the amazing projects happening here! This is such a creative and inspiring community.

My friend and I have an idea to build a very non-traditional sort of harp…a combination of the pedal harp and auto-harp. Unfortunately, we lack the woodworking knowledge/abilities, and so are looking to commission someone to help us with the construction. It is a fairly ambitious (we are thinking the instrument would be about our height, 66” or so tall) and unique project that we are hoping to complete within the year.

Is this an interesting proposition for anyone?

Thanks in advance for any advice!
-Chelsea

Since this is an international forum, it would help to know you location.

I could do it. A pedal harp’s woodworking stuff is a bit complex,
but the metalworking in it is very complex and without detailed
planning and drawings I wouldn’t expect the mechanism to
work correctly.

The autoharp is a much simpler thing to build. That’s because it
just damps strings and the mechanism sits on top of the strings.

If you must build a chromatic harp I’d recommend starting with a
lever harp design. These harps are much more straightforward
compared with a pedal harp.

Right…we are located in Brooklyn, NY, but are willing to travel within the states and Canada for any potential builders. Sorry to not have said that initially!

There is a great blog on a custom built harp, by Lumberjock Donna Menke. The latest entry: http://lumberjocks.com/DonnaMenke/blog/21440 Be sure to check price and availability of strings and hardware before you plunge forward on your chosen instrument project.
