Topic tags/keywords: question mahogany

Back about 1990, some crates of EPDM rubber bales cane to where I worked. The company decided to try some from Brazil. These crates were made up of 3” wide, tongue&groove boards. Kind of a dull brown in colour. When the crates were empty, we were to just throw them out…..ah, I don’t think so.

Anyway, some made to my woodshop ( don’t ask any questions…) and I started to make a few projects out of this wood. A few things turned up:

Can’t sand it smooth, but a scraper will leave a polished shine,
Can’t stain it, stain just disappears. A coat of varnish will turnit a nice “Mahogany” red,
Musty smell, stringy splinters, about half the wood has a fiddle-back grain to it,

Of all the projects I made from this stuff, I have one that I can get pictures of:!https://s3.amazonaws.com/vs-lumberjocks.com/lgzha6f.jpg!

Any ideas whatpasses for “crate wood” down in Brazil?

Whatever they have an abundance of. A guy I talked to, from Africa, said they burn ebony.

At a woodshop were I worked we got pallets with Honduran mahogany skids. WE fought over it. I managed to come up with 2 2-1/2 X 3 X 48 inch pieces. Nice stuff for small projects. There’s no telling what may come out of Brazil in crates.
