Topic tags/keywords: swap spring 2018

Looks like I’ve volunteered to run the next swap after the knife swap wraps up tomorrow. I’ll start another thread when we get closer to the actual swap, but the consensus seems to be that we don’t want to start until February or so.

In the mean time, let’s kick around some ideas for what we’ll swap. Mallets (possibly hammers too?) were one idea floated. Boxes have been in the running for the past three swaps. What other things are people interested in swapping? I’m planning to fire up a survey after Thanksgiving, so let’s have some suggestions of what needs to be on the survey.

Plus, once the knife swap wraps up, this thread will give us a place to talk about things like glitter bombs, Thor hammers, or the dearly departed green fez.

Dave, I’ll be the first. In a few days I can say “I stand relieved”. :-)

Boxes sound fun! I can’t think of anyone who don’t like to make boxes.

One of the other things on my build list is planes, but being the kind of guy I am, I headed to Discount Steel and bought some cold-rolled steel and cartridge brass and am putting together ideas for an infill plane – but I’m pretty sure that’s going to take me long enough to get right that I wouldn’t want to swap one.

Anyway, good to see Jeff and Mos responding already. I hope others chime in and we have a fun swap next spring!

I haven’t been able to participate yet, but one of these days. . . . . . Almost pulled the trigger on the beer swap but life got busy. I’ll definitely be watching this one!

I might be able to participate also. Missed the last couple of swaps. Work just gets in the way.

My plate’s pretty full but I should be able to jump in if it doesn’t launch until February or so.

I’ll just float a new idea out there because I don’t recall it ever being discussed… how about vises/clamps? I know we’ve seen some cool wooden specialty clamps and I’ve seen some killer wooden vises made in the past. I’ve always wanted to duplicate some of my machinist’s vises in wood but it’s one of those things I’ll probably never do for myself.

For some reason I’ve been thinking of making an axe. Would be cool to receive one but I’m not sure. Anyway February starts vacation time for me. I’ll have to play this swap by ear. Don’t know what’s going on yet.

Clamps. Hmm! A guy never has enough clamps!

For an axe, I’d definitely have to hit some estate sales to find something worthy of rehandling.

I like the way you guys think!

Axes sound like some serious shipping… how about hatchets? I do like the idea though :-)

All good ideas there Gilley (except pickles… unless you’re pickling eggs – I’ll take those!) Screwdrivers have been done and it was a great swap. I still use the set I got all the time. I’d definitely do that one again.

Maybe a little more generic than just hatchets to include froes, adzes, drawknives and other roughing and splitting tools?

For axes, maybe we just ship an acorn and an axe-head. “Some assembly required.” ;-) heck, that’ll go in a small fixed-price box, right?

I think I’ll probably lump axes, froes, hatchets, adzes, etc into one category for purposes of the survey, but we’ve still got months to figure it out.

Don’t know about a pickle swap… sounds like that could be messy shipping.

Would love to jump in on a Roughing/Splitting Swap but would also get in on a Plane swap(specially Router Planes).
