Topic tags/keywords: door hardware question

This is a question for the trim guys out there. I’ve been really unhappy with the quality of door locks I’ve put on houses lately. The brand that comes to mind are the kwik set. The ones on my house and shop have failed after a few years of use. Might have something to do with plastic parts! They feel cheap the first time you turn them. I remember locks from twenty years ago and I know they worked a lot better. I’ll keep putting the cheap crap on houses because that is what the contractors suppy, but in my own house I’d rather have something that will last over five years. Any good ideas? Thanks

You just need to spend more money for quality.

A good mortise lockset can cost you $100-$500 but will last beyond your lifetime.

You could get a high end quality Schlage, Baldwin, Corbin or Medeco.

Actually, since Baldwin was bought by Quickset, (if memory serves), their quality has taken a noticeable decline.

Medeco is a great brand, as Gary pointed out, but the high end products from the other manufacturers will serve you well also.

I spent most of the last 4 years installing for a small, boutique door & window company in Portland, OR. Most of the time we installed Baldwin & it never gave us any trouble. I also like the Stone Mountain line from Cifial. One of our suppliers was Chown Hardware. You might get some good ideas and links to other brands there as well.
