I see it all the time. It could work 20 years ago but public is very informed now so the trick makes the merchant look dumb. In order to avoid that they try preventing you from being informed, which makes it even dumber.
For example just got email from Acme with an “amazing” deal. $50 off Makita circular saw.

It does not list the model name and it is very hard to find it on the product page. If you do manage to find it you will see that this saw costs $99 without sale on all major suppliers sites.
Tricky huh? I wonder if anyone falls for this

The short answer to your subject question is – yes.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of naive buyers who would fall for this simple deceit, despite the availability of competitive information. If there weren’t, they wouldn’t continue to do it. I try not to buy from suppliers who practice this regularly but most all do it at one time or another.

Actually almost everyone thinks everyone else is stupid and miraculously (well not really) almost all of them are correct.

Possibly tricky or it’s a Makita deal that is being run from the manufacturer through all vendors so everyone will have the same price. I have seen that a lot.
Wait til the Acme promotion is over and then check the others sites and see if it’s still $99. Then you’ll know whether it’s a trick or legit.

As for Acme, they tend to run some kind of promotion every week but it’s usually not worth getting excited about.

Only 49.5% of people are below average, don’t over hype it!

There are price tracking websites, like 3 camels. $99 is the average price fir this saw and has been for years.

Not to be picky, well, maybe a little.

Here are 10 numbers. They could even be unfortunate IQs:
0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 10

The average is 1 (10/10)

That means that 90% are below average.

I like the one where they say buy one get the other at 50% off. People think the items are half price but it’s actually 25% off each item when you buy two. Sometimes I will say to a sales person. “oh, 25% off each item” and even they think it’s a half price sale.
