I have recently moved and begun transforming a worn down one car garage into my new shop. It is half the size of the one I left. BUT it is not in what we call “LITTLE CHICAGO”. i.e. Jackson County Illinois! Good riddance!

Any ways this one car garage, the entire lower areas were comply rotted away. The sill plates were a thin sheet of dust and on half the structure the bottom of the wall studs were 2-4 inches gone.

I had to buy a couple of bottle jacks and borrow every car jack n the block and jack this monster about 6 inches off the ground, install NEW TREATED sill plates, sister in new treated FEET to the rotted wall studs, douche it with some insecticide and set it back down. The ole girl cracked, whined and complained the entire time.

This ole timers wall studs were not even a uniformed width apart. Every damn one was different. AND GAWD I HATE OLD FUR! NASTY STUFF!

I was lucky that someone had installed a modern 220 volt 10 amp sub panel in the place years ago. BUT I elected to rip most of the ole stuff out and run new circuits with lots and lots of 4 plug outlets. Since this was a rebuild really got to run all the wire under the new drywall.

I ran separate circuits for most stuff such as my compressor and table saw. Never again shall a Compressor kicking in trip a breaker while running 8 foot piece of oak through my saw!

There is a run down ole steel storage shed out back, that is only 5 feet tall. Luckily it is sitting on a good 10 by 10 concrete pad. SOOOO I plan to take that all apart and build a nice TALL wood structure I can use to store WOOD to make more space.

ALSO ran into piece of luck. While enquiring into permits and inspections in this area, I found out, like every other county in Illinois, that they are broke. They got rid of all the inspectors and will simply take your BRIBE/PERMIT money and let you do what you wish. Got to love Illinois! Nuclear waste dump! If you build it! They will come!

PICTURES coming after it’s done.

ANYWAYS a few things I thought I would share.

1) Everything I bought at MENARDS is about half as much as at Home Cheapo and or Lowes. and better quality.

2) Bought my first LED shop lights and outdoor security flood lights. I will never again have to get use to that nervous system wrecking growl/hum from cheap 4 foot Walmart Fluorescent shop lights. When I plugged in my first LED SHOP light it was like seeing for the first time….. SOO damn bright, light and cheap. MENARDS 9 bucks! They come highly recommended!

ALSO piece of advice! If you are moving, make sure that the CAP on your bottle of LIQUID SMOKE, that you love, is on tight before you pack it up and move to a new place!!!

Pretty funny (laughing with you, not at you) and a LOT of work. Congrats, looks like you have it whipped now, so maybe it’s all downhill. I agree with you about Menards being less expensive…but to me the more important part is that when i go there I can usually find what I need. the smaller HD and blue box stores in my area are often little more than a small local hardware when it comes to finding a solution. So Menards (all 3 of mine are 20 miles away, compared to one Lowes that 5 miles off) is still my first stop unless it’s something I am absolutely sure I can find at big blue. HD left our area after Menards arrived, the closest one is over 35 miles away, so i don’t get there often.

Closet one to me now is about 60 miles so I don’t go there just for a bolt or a box of nails…. I did find some LED 4 foot LED shop lights for 9 bucks each… WOW! last time iI shopped around I was looking at $40 each.

I hope those Political Prisoners in CHINA keep up the good work!

You are doing a great job on your new shop.

I love Menards and the 11% off sales. They also store plywood flat and not on arms that warp the Wood.

Eh, I only go to Menard’s because they have a few things in stock that the others have to order. They do have a better selection of sheet goods and other wood products. NOT impressed with their fence and deck products….that was a total joke.

As far as their prices being cheaper…..not in my area.

Have your say...
