Hey guys. I just bought a Unisaw – 1990’s vintage – it has the common motor starter box – square with rounded corners – catalog #52-704. The box works fine, but is missing the cover. I’m having trouble finding one. Anybody have one to sell/give/trade, or know where one could be purchased? I hate to replace the box – again, the components are fine, I just need the cover. Thanks for any help. Todd 951-202-0271 So. Cal.

You will need to measure the box… Delta used a couple of different suppliers for the LVC over the years, so it could be any one of many different dimensions – even if the catalog #’s are the same. Finding the cover might be a bit difficult though – they aren’t usually parted out and are typically sold as complete starters. You do have a few different options though. You could put a WTB ad over at the OWWM site and see if someone has one… or maybe the entire starter for fairly cheap. Maybe you could find one on the bay as well, but it might be a bit pricey. Another option would be to get a new metal enclosure (at any electrical supply house, or maybe even the BORG) and transfer the guts into it. That would let you get rid of that goofy interlock switch at the same time. Another possibility would be just to make one yourself. Doesn’t have to be metal, you could probably whip something out made from 1/4” plywood or similar. Last option would be to just ignore it :) I’m guessing that since you said it works fine that you have bypassed the cover interlock switch – so it sounds like you have been using it that way already.

Cheers,
Brad

Make one out of wood? This is a woodworkers forum, after all….

Thanks for the replies, guys. I am finding it hard to acquire – and will continue to work to maybe find an alternate metal enclosure to use in lieu. I appreciate the suggestions of making one out of wood but….not that easy. The guts extend out beyond the cabinet-mounted half of the box. The custom made wooden cover would need to be built like an open ended box – no problem, but i must say that have the wooden box covering 230V connections is a little unnerving – where there could conceivably be a spark….up goes the garage attached to the house….it is a great idea and I will probably do it at least until I can find a better solution – a better enclosure. Leaving it open…there is 230V connected to HOT screws/connections inside that box. I wouldn’t want to walk behind it for fear of electrocution – and it is always HOT when plugged in – although with the better half often hassling me (THAT is what hearing protection is actually for – piss on it, I’ll take the hearing damage just from the machines) walking too close to high voltage doesn’t always sound like a bad option (that or a hose connected to a tailpipe – just have to remember to start the vehicle – plus make sure there is enough gas….) – (and how did they come to be considered the “better half” anyway? – Side discussion I guess – maybe on another forum – Dr. Phil or whatever) but the open-box 230v exposure is a bit concerning. Sorry for the facetious/joking rant, we (my “better half” and I) actually celebrate our 29th anniversary this coming weekend (and a couple of those years were actually pretty good)! Thanks again.
