I been looking for a use Powermatic 50 6’’ Jointer to replace my Ryboi benchtop jointer, but I am having a tough time finding one at a price I can afford. A guy is trying to sell me one from the 70’s for $350 I talked him down from $500. I am wondering is $350 to high? I am looking to pay $150 to $200 or maybe less. I love old USA made arns. So dont remend a new jointer cause I am not buying one.

Charles:

Are there pictures ? Is this from an ad ?

Have you checked it out yet ? Does the motor run smoothly ? Are the blades in good shape ? If the motor runs with a belt, is the belt in good shape ?

Do you know the actual model number ?

What condition are the tables in ? Are they flat ? Are they co-planar ? Have you run a few board-feet of hardwood through it—particularly something with difficult figured grain—maybe hard maple or curly maple ?

In a case like this …. where this IS a machine that you WANT …. I don’t sweat nickels and dimes too much. In other words, if it IS in excellent mechanical condition, and you’d feel good about $350, then … I say … go for it !

Well … those are the things that I would look at, but—again—if it’s the jointer you want, and you’re happy with the price, then … I’d just buy the thing, if it looks good :-)
