Topic tags/keywords: delta drill press Has anyone tried (in person) both the 17” and the new 18” delta drill presses? I’m curious to know if there’s much of a difference for the $250 price difference? Specs look pretty darn similar. Models are: 18-900L (18 inch delta) and the 17-959L (17 inch delta) What am I missing other that a little bit of a facelift? $250 for 1” of quill travel that I won’t need, I’m leaning toward the 17”. However, I don’t want to regret this purchase. |

I played with both before buying the 18” Objectively, the biggest difference was the quick-change belt system with the auto-tensioning, I really preferred it. I also liked the lamp on the 18” model better. And the low speed is almost 50% higher on the 17” model, which can be a problem with really big Forstner bits and drilling in metal. That’s the main reason I didn’t get the Powermatic, even though I really liked the variable speed of that one. Subjectively, the 18” model just felt better, I can’t really pin it down but it just seemed to be a higher level of … something. Also, and I know it’s silly, I just didn’t like the look of the 17” model. -- The Wood Nerd -- http://www.workshopaholic.net |

I guess I’m in the same boat from looking at the 18 in person, and only seeing the 17 on the net. But it’s always hard to make the bigger purchase than you wanted to make. I’m sure I wont remember it later, but that new table saw isn’t going to come any quicker now is it? |

For anyone interested, both of these delta drill presses are 15% off at Woodcraft for the month of February. Makes my choice easier. |

From woodcraft? Maybe they’d let you take the receipt back and get the discount? |

Yes, from Woodcraft. I have a pretty good relationship with the manager, I just emailed her to see what she can do for me. -- The Wood Nerd -- http://www.workshopaholic.net |

Update: Heard back from the manager, said to call her tomorrow and we’ll do a return/resale at the sale price over the phone. Really pays to buy local sometimes. -- The Wood Nerd -- http://www.workshopaholic.net |
