Best of luck on that, and keep us posted! I like my little bench top jointer well enough, but I agree, a longer bed old iron U.S. made jointer would be a HUGE step up. The closest I have seen lately on the used market is a Powermatic 54A going for $750.00, not exactly a bargain you know?

Honestly for those kind of bills, I will hold out for an 8” model, or keep chucking change aside and grabbing a new 12” combination planer / jointer…

I like the old machines, but I don’t expect to get many deals on
Powermatic stuff unless they are in rough condition. In fact, I’ve
never bought anything from Powermatic – asking prices are almost
always more than I’m willing to pay.

Keep an eye on auctions and go to estate sales – you may get lucky.

The best way to find exceptional bargains is to ask around – lots
of people have old machinery in their barns and garages they haven’t
used in years and never will.

The guys at OWWM tradde machines around and while you’ll probably
not find somebody willing to bcut you such a deal on a vintage Powermatic,
you may find a bargain on something from a less sought-after, but equally
good brand.

I sometimes see older Delta and Jet models in that price range… But a Powermatic? Asking prices tend to be steep…

Who knows though, try auctions, and maybe Government surplus… You might get lucky.

I’ve had similar experiences to Loren’s. Every once in a while, I’ll spot an older Powermatic with a reasonable price. It’s usually scooped up before I can get in touch with the seller. I actuall prefer the older heavier machines to more modern ones, even if they require some TLC. Good luck on your search & if you find two at that price, give me a yell!
