Topic tags/keywords: resource jig question

I bought a rough cut slab off of some guy for next to nothing, (he cut the wood up VERY roughly with a chainsaw). He thought it was maple but wasn’t confident. I leveled it and there are features in the grain that look maple but the color is off. Is this Oregon big leaf Maple? I’ve never worked with it before so I’m not sure.

Certainly looks like it to me. I have lots that is that dark and has similar figure. I live on Vancouver Island where it grows like weeds.

Thanks ship. Now I can’t wait to see what the figure is on the other slab. Not bad for $15 each.

I’m pretty sure that with grain features like this that shipwright is correct.

I would agree.

It’s definitely alder.
