I’ve known about this house in Maine for a while, but was unaware of an awesome feature until reading about the renovation this estate went through in the 1990’s: There is a tree growing through the barn roof! And yes, this feature was retained while the building was extensively restored. It is an american elm, one of the few remaining in the area. Just thought I’d share this. Photobucket

This photo was taken circa 1915, and is a popular, hand-colored postcard. The house itself was built in 1756. Not sure when the tree became part of the architecture!

Do you know of it’s location?
I live in Maine and it would be interesting to visit.

gljacobs: It’s the so-called Storer Mansion, on storer St one block west of Main St in Kenebunkport. Presumably he was an industrialist, politician, or sea-captain, if all those real-estate moguls or chamber-of-commerce types are to be taken seriously….. hairy: That’s a scary pic, like as if the vegetation isn’t waiting for mankind to disappear before plants start taking over the Earth!

fredf and others: If memory serves right, there is still a tree emerging from a structure on the property. However, I do recall that it was more to the rear of the grounds. Perhaps there is a new tree emerging from the garage you spoke of. Hmmm…research…
