The purpose of this Forum question is share on what happened to a fellow L Jock, who blogged earlier today.
http://lumberjocks.com/Midway/blog/112153
He used Tite Bond glue on a gun case and it ruined the metal finish of the gun and hardware… In my 40 years of woodworking- This was a first to me.
The problem is the Ph level in water borne glues- is acidic; therefore corrosion of metal, from the off gasses through the felt.
The Tite Bond rep replied, with some “interesting” information, as well as other L Jocks-
Conclusion: I agree with Gene on 3M 77 or self adhere adhesive felt.
I would love to hear from “box builders” on what they recommend-

I built some valet trays to give as gifts. I used 3M 77 to glue the leather to the base and self-adhesive felt for the bottom. It’s not enclosed, so there aren’t any issues with gassing anyway.

Any time I plan to add felt for any reason, I’ll use the self adhesive type. They sell square yards of it at Woodcraft for a reasonable price and it’s very easy to work with.

Thanks Rich, I did not know that water based wood glue could off-gass vapors that will oxidize metal in a gun case! R’s advice- self adhesive felt- thats what I will do. To other’s the agony of product failure; please share and help others.

Double back tape works. Of course I have a felt collection minus the self adhesive I got from a fabric store that closed….....

Have your say...
