Topic tags/keywords: reclaimed lumber finish mantel

We have salvaged some 4”x8” floor joists from our old house that are from the 40’s and we would like to repurpose one of these for a fireplace mantel in our new home. I want to keep the rough sawn and rugged look that is on it but also want to put something on the wood to finish it and care for the mantel.

What do you recommend I use for finishing as I have never taken on a project like this in the past?

You could poly it. If you didn’t like the gloss or other finish, wire brush it a little. Do a test run on something.
