I have been a hobbies for most of my life. Just made whatever I wanted never really sold anything. Well last year I had to have back surgery and Las week was told I will never return to my care of pipe welding again. So I’m thinking about a wood shop. I have looked into making a business plan and I’m more lost then ever. My question is how did you guys start off. Did you jump in or just start slow. I don’t have a large shop. Just looking for some pointers

I have had a very successful furniture business that I started on a whim as a part time thing… I was flooded right out of the gate and being my second job, I have a hard time keeping up (most of the time 3-4 months backed up) PM if you would like to know how I did it and maybe I can shine some light on it!

I’ve started a small business, but it didn’t include my woodworking or shop. I did business strategy consulting work and merger advice, and actually did okay. I also participated in other startups.

From that experience, I can say that the MAJOR FACTOR is not how you set it up. That will evolve and can be changed. The KEY is finding paying work. I recommend finding a client or three and making the wood projects they want, and focus on that for a few months at least to get started.

With the above views stated, I am now going to PM to buckbuster for input myself. Right now I am in that startup phase of making some small but very functional wood projects for sale. And so far, I have done nothing but work on the design and prototypes of my offerings.

Thank you for you your help. I decided to go around my local area and ask some of the wood shops how they started and if they had any advice most said good luck and walked away. But a few gave me some pointers. I’m just looking to make some extra money. I am on social security disability and they frown if you make extra money

Have your say...
