Every time I check the forums here I see another recommendation for someone to check out joethewoodworker.com DIY vacuum generators. It gets me wondering how many of us are using them. I’ve had mine complete with a couple of large bags, also per Joe’s instructions, for about five years and I couldn’t live without it.

So….... how many are we?

Do you have one?

So which versions are you referencing. I see several on his website. Also, how much did you spend on building it and did you buy his $149 hardware kit? Thanks.

OOOH, this is cool. I can’t believe I’ve missed this. His site is down for maintenance at the moment, but I’m also curious as to how much did it cost to make. And what do you use to pull the vacuum, a venturi type of deal and your air compressor? Or what’s attached to that orange hose there?

rance, I built mine before the kit was available so I sourced my parts separately from local sources but that’s about what they cost. Also there was only one version then as I remember but if there are more now I’d say mine is like Bill’s.

souichiro, yes it’s a venturi style vac generator and the orange hose would be his compressor hose connection.

Count me in. About a year ago I found a vacuum pump on Craigslist, had no idea what I was doing, and used the kit from Joe to make it workable. I blogged about it here. It is a real kick to veneer stuff. It adds a whole new dimension to projects, but I am such a newbie at it.

I just got some real vinyl sheeting from Joe for a Christmas present. Now I can make some proper bags and replace the shower curtain that I use on my press.

I have not bought any veneer from Joe’s other site (VeneerSupplies.com).

The arch panels for my jewelry boxes were made using a vacuum generator. I downloaded the instructions and bought a kit from Joe. I use it for veneering as well. It has taken my work to a new level. You can see pictures of my vacuum generator in my blog #2. Presently, I just ordered a router lift and am planning to make a new upgraded router table. See the Jessem forum discussion on that one. There’s a lot of discussion on this topic.

FYI the sheet vinyl used to make windows in soft boat tops and awnings is the same stuff. I got mine at an awning shop . You can get different weights too. Lighter is easier to work with. Heavier will work better if you are bending with it.

I’m still in the market for one. I have one person who said they would sell me theirs after a project but I’m still waiting. Any longer I might go to Joe myself.

This is mine. Upright configuration but otherwise, just like the others.
