Maybe now that the popcorn kernels have all exploded, it could be brought back. Not my call, obviously. Problem is, a lot of people can’t tear their eyes away from a train wreck. In my personal estimation, crafts people seem to get a lot more upset over interpersonal strife than others. Not saying it’s bad, it’s just the way some people are. Now, personally, I’ve seen some of the most vile on the internet (hard to believe what people consider entertaining O.o), and the real answer is to just back/walk/run away. There is nothing that requires us to look at a train wreck. Maybe there is a way to structure this site such that the “drama queens” can have their say without the rest of the worthies here having to look at it. I honestly don’t know the cure for that one.

Interestingly, I also participate in an automotive forum where there is, to my knowledge, NO flaming/porn/filth experienced. That possibly comes from having a pile of moderators pouncing on the problems within a short period of time from instigation. But that takes time, dedication, and even money to accomplish. People seem to expect the internet to be free, and free from “ick”. These are not mutually exclusive.

Gentelmen, what has actually changed since the move to close the off topic forum?
Granted the distrubance has been resolved but it took proactive action on the part of the site programmer to change that.
I am certan they could do the same thing at any time they felt it was necessary with or without a “coffee lounge”.

What we have now is a constant peppering of off topic postings intermingled with woodworking information.
It makes the site harder to use and more difficult to navigate.

My vote is to bring it back. It was very entertaining, humorous at times, informative about a huge number of subjects, a way to learn more about fellow LJs and a catch all category for topics unrelated to working directly.

I would agree that the Coffee Lounge subjects have just integrated into other forums and blogs since there is nowhere else for “off topic” subjects.
Bring back the Lounge so the other forums can be back to the topic.
And as said before, if you don’t like it, don’t go there.

”And as said before, if you don’t like it, don’t go there.”

This site is financed by advertising revenues.

The above answer … won’t cut it for advertisers, many of whom are pretty cautious about the sort of online content that gets associated with their corporate brands.

In other words … it really isn’t that simple.

But apparently the site is now monitered, notice the “flag” on the posts now.

Neil…The off topic content is already here, it just needs a home. I was just agreeing with Bob#2. By off topic, I don’t mean garbage or trash talk. The trash that caused Martin to shut it down originally can easily be put anywhere, on any forum, blog, or project post. Now that new memberships are open again hopefully the trouble does not start again.

The loss of the coffee lounge can’t be blamed on me, I wasn’t here for that one. LOL

I vote for the coffee lounge to be brought back.
It was fun and lighthearted.

maybe im a heretic but i never selected a forum topic to read from i always just scanned down the front page and read anything that took my fancy

so when reading any forum topic i have no idea what forum it has been posted to

that way you get a general mix of anything

so now i dont notice the difference now the coffee lounge has gone

just my two cents worth

I also think that it should be brought back for the simple reason that it is still here. It’s just unmarked and scattered all over the forum instead of being in one place. People still post off topic things; they just put them all over the place mixed in with everything else. If the place is monitored now then it should not be a real problem. Actually, it should be easier to monitor if everyone cooperates and put’s these topics in the coffee lounge because they will all be in one area. People can misbehave on any thread whether there is a Coffee Lounge or not. That’s just my thoughts. Whatever the people who own this place want to do is fine with me since they are the ones that own it but I think the Coffee Lounge would be a positive thing if it is controlled.
