Topic tags/keywords: resource tip trick

About six months ago I bought the Dewalt 735 13” thickness planer ( which is great). It comes with a chip diverter/ bag attachment, because it has an exhaust fan that shoots the shavings out quite violently. I didn’t use this piece because I have a dust collector which makes it cleaner and safer. The diverter, which looks like the floor attachment on a vacuum, was thrown into a corner of my shop not to reappear for six months when I was reorganizing and cleaning up. Maybe it was because I was sweeping when I found it, but the idea hit me like my mamma used to when I was fresh; “Use it as a floor sweep”. All I needed was a coupler to hook it up to my 4” dust collection hose and voila, a free floor sweep. If anyone else has done anything like this with something they had lying around; share it with us. I hope anyone who’s bought the Dewalt 735 planer didn’t throw away that diverter shoot.

You’re thinking like a true LumberJock. One of the best aspects of the hobby for me is the problem solving experiences. We frequently have to think, “I need this result, how can I get there?”. Or, “Here’s a problem, how can I get around it?” Over the last 2 years since I started, I look at household items differently. All those glass baby food jars and empty peanut butter jars no longer look like trash. Furniture about to go to the dump? Not before the hardware is salvaged. In your case a formerly unused attachment finds a new function. No wonder there are so many packrats here!

Heh…my shop’s out in the country and I don’t do finishing there, so I usually just sweep up generally. Then open all 6 windows and both double doors and fire up the 200mph leaf blower….ain’t no sawdust left after that!

Boardman, I’m with you. My leaf blower is one of my favorite shop tools. Really gets the dust out of those nooks and cranies.

I also use my leaf blower. I open up a rear window and install an exuast fan. Of course I blow about half my tools off the walls.

I hope ya’ll wear your dust mask while performing this operation.

I store my 5” ROS discs in an old 5 1/4 floppy case.
