There is a simple wooden game that I made as a Christmas gift. It consists of a small board with 3 vertical dowels and 5 rings, each ring a different size.

You start with the rings on a dowel, largest at the bottom and each one in order until the smallest is at the top.

The rules are simple – - (1) Only move one ring at a time to another dowel, (2) Never place a ring on top of another ring that is smaller and (3) move the entire stack to another dowel in the fewest number of moves possible.

Does anyone know the name of this game?

Believe it or not, it was once featured in a science fiction story, but it was back in the 60’s and I can’t remember the title or author.
