I’m going to New Orleans for a few days for work next month, and thought I’d see what suggestions I could find for what to do with some free time? Any must see’s or must do’s? WW related would be cool, but I’m open to any suggestions. I’ve never been there before.

Kerry, I don’t know about woodworking related, but there is a lot of great architecture here in New Orleans.

Be sure to take a ride (preferably by streetcar) all the way down St. Charles Avenue from the business district to the river. This is where you will see some of the most beautiful old mansions anywhere. Of course you’ll want to walk around the French Quarter, which contains Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral (a couple of must-sees), as well as Bourbon Street. If you are so inclined, sign up for a tour bus ride that will take you around some of the areas still devastated from Katrina. I promise you will be awed by the scope of it…. television can’t do it justice.

Charlie is right, take the trolley all the way from the French Quarter to Audubon Park. Most of the old part of NO, ante and post bellum, is on the higher ground created by the the Mississippi’s natural levee and did not suffer the devistation of the lower parts nearer to Lake Ponchatrain and east.

My brother’s old house in the Lakewood area is just a bare slab now, they’re now living uptown. It is amazing how much recovery there has been, but how much is still left to do!

Eat! Drink! Be merry. I really liked Mr. B’s

I took a fun swamp tour too. Walk around the old neighborhoods of the Garden District.

My last trip (pre Katrina) was all about the music (when I wasn’t working, of course). There was a lot of great jazz and blues being played. I even encountered a few street musicians.

There’s still hurricane recovery work to be done – Habitat for Humanity, through your church or a quick search of the web will provide you with a landslide of volunteer opportunities

Nothing like serving others to recharge the batteries!
