That’s funny because I posted that as an April Fools joke a few years ago. (I know it’s real this time)

When I saw this I looked for something about the deal. This is what I found (I have a Sawstop):

I was planning to buy an ICS this fall/winter. Any reason you all think I should consider adjusting the plan based on this news?

The guy was only going to make “the big money”, and save the world at the same time, if he could force his gizmo on everyone.

@TimHut – I’d still buy Festool could only improve upon the design of SawStop IMO, although they could also include it in their annual price hikes so take that however you want. I’m sure they’ll be more news as the acquisition develops.

Or maybe he’s just tired of the court cases.

Didn’t he win his last big court case?

I thought he was originally a lawyer?

EDIT: Yep, he was originally a patent attorney with a doctorate in physics and is/was an amateur woodworker.

I don’t think you understand how patent law works, at least in the US. If he doesn’t sue anybody who brings something to market similar to his invention he loses his patent. Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

Based on the article linked above, looks like a capital play to me. Sawstop is expected to continue to operate as is out of Oregon, so they get access to the holding company’s capital, engineering and manufacturing scale, while the holding company gets Sawstop ’ s technology and profitability.

Could be good for both. Hopefully good for us too, as we may see more products with similar tech, and better or more accessories for Sawstop saws.

Obviously you don’t own any festool :) (TIC)

I don’t see it impacting pricing, but they are both quality companies and make great tier 1 tools.

I’ve had my 5hp ICS for quite a few years now. Great tool, great quality, and CS is off the charts. Only bummer part was they don’t run speicals like free overarm gaurd or base for ICS line. I even called and asked if they were doing the normal free item for ICS and the response was “we don’t do specials on the ICS line”, so I asked why not, and they said “we don’t have to”.

Pure pleasure to use and its nice to know the safety factor is there. I’d not wait for anything and to be honest not going to get cheaper. Buy once cry once! Take that cost and amortize it over the years you will have it and the cost it reasonable when compared to an injury

Cheers.

Thanks Bonesbr. I want to wait a few months to save the money for one but if this development was going to have an immediate impact on price or if a redesign was likely I would adjust my plans. I plan on the 3hp ICS I believe but I still wonder if I should get the 5 hp. I started wiring in for a 3 HP but could change course.

I hope this means that they just have more accessory options in the future and thoughtful upgrades. And expand the technology to other types of tools.
