Yea . . . I know . . . another off topic post. :-/

What the heck is IEXPLORE.EXE and why will it not let me shut down my pc?

About 2 weeks ago I noticed that my pc was running slower. I thought it was my internet connection but it has now gotten slower. Its sooo slow that Tomcat could drill a hole through a piece of 8/4 Oak with a 35mm fostner bit and his new hand drill from eBay than it would take me to load Word.

This past week when I go to shut down my pc IEXPLORE.EXE window pops up . . . looking like its trying to shut down . . . and will not allow my pc to power down. I have to manually shut it off using the power button.

Im running Internet Explorer (not version 7) and just installed Spybot about 2 weeks ago. Have been running AVG for several months.

Any ideas????

IEPLORE.EXE is internet explorer. As to why it won’t let you shut down your P.C. Hmmmm.

Try upgrading to V7. Maybe that will replace the problem dll (with some other problem)

Another option is to do hold down Control-Alt-Delete at the same time. When the window pops up, click on “Processes” and find IEXPLORE.EXE. Click on “Kill Process” and then OK. I think those are the right steps – I’m using Linux myself.

A better long-term fix would be to get Firefox, a far superior (and far safer) browser to begin with. And even better? Ditch Windows.

But I think I’ve gone too far. :^)

I agree with Eric about Firefox. IE was taking up to a minute to launch but I switched to Firefox about 2 years ago and found that I could be on the internet in less than 10 seconds (my pc is 5 years old and while it needs replacing, it works and I had rather spend the money on tools).

First, why do you have to bring me into this?? ;)

Seriously, I have Firefox and I like it a lot. IEXPLORE.EXE is indeed internet explorer, and it can be temperamental at times, to say the least.

Guys,

This is not about what browser Zuki is using but about the fact that Microsoft came up with a couple of “brilliant” ideas, among which the use of IE to manage files. You can install Firefox (which you should) but IE still does the file managing. Even if you install a new version of IE, it might still be the case that the old one does the file managing. The net result of this design decision is the fact that a failure in IE is catastrophic for the system and there isn’t much you can do about it.

Zuki, about giving you advice on what do to, I run Linux almost exclusively and I avoid Windows like the plague. Hence, my experience with fixing it is minimal, at best.

Zuki… Do a back-up immediately. I had to reinstall windows on my wife’s computer last week. You can lose everything. (Oh, do I know you can lose everything)

You want to know something really odd . . . after I initially posted this message the problem stopped.

My PC can shut down now. Maybe it got scared that I was reading up about firefox. :-)

Tks all.
