Topic tags/keywords: wood identification species brownstone nyc brooklyn walnut mahogany maple birdseye

Hi these pics are from a late 1860s Renaissance Revival brownstone in Brooklyn Heights. Can anyone ID the species? Client thought it was walnut but it looks to me like mahogany or maple with a faux mahogany stain. Trying to match new built-ins to existing work.

I lean to maple, but certainly not definite.

You’ve got to provide more (and better) pictures if you want a chance for visual ID, particularly with that patina.

The pictures are fine but you will need a person with visual knowledge and not a big mouth…...

Hard to tell with the patina on them. Also, the forum reduces the size of pictures to where it can be hard to make out the detail.

It does not look at all like walnut to me. Are there any spots or pieces you could sand to bare wood? That’d be the best way to make a positive ID.

I have an early 20th century bedroom suit made of walnut that looks almost exactly like that. That doesn’t prove anything though. More pictures would help.

If you can’t remove finish, maybe there is a piece that can be removed carefully to examine the back.

That’s a good idea. Sometimes a piece of molding or something can tell you.

Think of the Keno brothers on “Antique Roadshow” ... I would hope that Charles Neil would pop in….
