Topic tags/keywords: midi lathe chisels used lathe

A friend is interested in starting in woodturning. He has asked me to see if there is anyone that is loooking to upgrade and who might be selling a midi lathe and some good chisels. Atlanta, Ga area. Maybe Chattanooga to Macon possibilities.

Lee did you get any response on this? It seems like the newer midi lathes are beefier than the older ones, is a new one in his budget?

LOL! I got one response from a lady who offered one where one of the legs had broken.

He could, can, afford a new one. I think he bought a Rikon on sale. Just because you CAN doesn’t mean you must.
I’ve saved hundreds on craigslist.

I agree new isn’t necessarily better and why spend money you don’t have to (especially if some of the older machines are better). I think it was FWW that recently did a review of midi-lathes, it seemed to me that the newer midis were a better lathe than what used to be described as a midi. I don’t have any experience with lathes at all (and I don’t think my budget would stand experimenting with one just now :-).
