Topic tags/keywords: delta planer 22-540

Gearbox on my Delta 22-540 planer bit the dust. Not able to locate one as they are obsolete…..rest of planer is still functioning.

If you are in need of any parts please contact me and I will ship on your dime.

Got it in scrap pile, but would rather help a brother or sister out.

If this is posted in wrong location please move to correct location. Long time lurker here but first time posting.

Stevethorton I just pulled apart a 22-540 i thought I got on a good deal at a sale for a 100 bucks. Bought bearings thinking this would fix it up but there is more. It needs both rollers, a cutter head pulley and I m not sure the if keyway in the cutter head has been damaged. Its either I pull the gear box and send it to you or you send me parts. I have yet to take the gearbox apart and inspect it. Where are you located? This planner is getting real close to the junk pile because of costs.
Thx Pete

Hey Steve, what exactly happened to your gearbox (if you still have it)? I have the same planer with a busted gear

OK, new here, and on a mission.
I have a 22-540 Type 1 from ‘93 and need new knives. Unfortunately I turned my old ones over to a buddy who incorporated them into a knife he forged. My cutterhead measures 12 5/8 wide, table 12 3/16” wide, looking at markings on cutterhead my knives appeared to have been 12 1/2”. Problem-the 22-547 knives measure 12”. I can stagger them to cover the table but then only 1 knife will hit the very outside of the table instead of 2. Delta support says my head should measure 12 1/8”, knives 12 1/16”. Been a long time since I purchased knives and don’t recall, but 12 1/16” doesn’t feel right.
Thoughts?
Stan

One of my gears is bad on my 22-540 Delta(#27.) Does anyone know where I might be able to get one? It is no longer stocked. I guess my only chance is that someone else has one with a bad motor and good gears that is willing to part it out. I need the blade setter as well, but not if I can’t find a replacement gear. Thanks everybody,
Kevin

Kevin, someone told me a few years ago when Delta Machinery was sold the new owner disposed of all the old machine parts. I suppose they thought people would buy new equipment. I suspect the gear you need is a standard off the shelf part if you can identify another machine with uses the same gear.

As an alternative would anyone else on the thread be willing to part out their non-functional planer?

I traded emails with the OP, Steve, back when he originally posted this and the guy is super busy in life and I think he decided it wasn’t worth his time. I have no idea what happened to the parts. We traded emails for awhile and I was going to drive down to pick up the parts and he stopped communicating. Maybe he found someone local.

Best use for these old Deltas might be to sell the parts to someone who wants to build a 12” jointer, or build one yourself. I have one and that’s what I plan for it. It sucks you can’t buy parts but it is what it is.

I used to own one of these and the handle on mine also failed. As is the case for most older Delta machinery the part is obsolete and I could not find a replacement. I was able to make the handle functional again at the cost of losing the fold-over for storage feature. A few carefully drilled holes with pins inserted and a liberal coating of J B Weld and it works. I gave the planer away to a friend when I purchased a Dewalt DW735, so I cannot take any pictures to show you the repair. Have a hard look at yours to see if you cannot restore it well enough to make the planer usable again.

Have your say...
