I’ve only been woodworking for about a year and was given a couple of old pallets by a neighbor. They’re a few decades old – I’m not sure what they’re made of but obviously not the typical pine pallets I see in my part of the country. My first thought was quarter sawn Red Oak but after sanding and briefly planing a couple boards I’m not convinced. Maybe mahogany? There’s some figuring here I’m not sure about. The first two pictures are in their original state and the last two pictures I wiped on a little water after working them to bring out the grain. I’d love some more educated opinions on this. Thanks for the help!

Last picture looks like oak. The other two resemble mahogany.

Interesting – haven’t heard of that before. What leads you to think that?

It may not all be the same thing, but I’m pretty sure that last one is blackjack. The black streaks and figure look just like the blackjack I have.
