Are web sites needed to sell our wares? Do you use a web site and if so how are you doing with it? Did you make it yourself? Do you have any recomendations? Do you sell through other avenues and have you been successful??? Thanks.

John—I don’t think a retail business can survive without a website.

There was a time when retailers couldn’t survive without a Yellow Pages ad, and display ads in the local phone book and newspapers. The web has replaced both.

I have a friend who is a superb craftsman … his work is all done on a custom basis (by hand), and he commands very respectable fees. Does he have a website? You bet! ( http://www.heramcustomwoodworking.com/ )

You can make your own website … if you have a knack for doing that kind of work and have the time, go for it.

But remember, the people you want to sell to could probably make something that would serve the same purpose as the product you are selling … that doesn’t mean it would be as finely crafted or as durable or as much of a pleasure to own as the products you create.

It all depends on WHAT you are selling, and to whom your sales audience is. But generally speaking, you are are selling retail in any way shape, or form, you MUST have a web site…

you definitly need some kind of website so customers can see what you make and sell. And you might want to put a email or phone number on the website so customers can get ahold of you. But you really need a website if you want to make any kind of money.
