I recently purchased some ball tip butt hinges (

There are some great videos out there on how to make the mortises for standard butt hinges. The Wood Whisperer has a very good example ( That method doesn’t seem to work for the ball tip hinges. The balls prevent the hinge from seating into the mortise fully.

I can only think of a couple solutions:
1. Have the hinge stick out further. That doesn’t look very good and I’m afraid moving the pivot further forward will effect the way the door opens.
2. Add an additional cutout to allow space for the balls. I’m not sure that will look good either.

Are there other options or techniques that you have used?

Try a hinge out with two pieces of scrap.
