Topic tags/keywords: jointer planer new-brunswick shelix

Good day fellow woodworkers,

We are making a bit of money on our next move so I will be investing roughly $3K CAD in buying a jointer and a planer. Because I can get both at the same time, and because I am leaning towards a helical cutter I would like to know if anyone is aware of two machines that are using the same carbide inserts?

For the planer I am leaning towards a DW735 with the shelix head upgrade, but I am having a hard time finding a 6” jointer that would sell with a shelix head as well.

The Magnum head that ships on some General jointers looks sweet, but their new helical head bench top planer takes different inserts.

I have also started looking at used jointers, but there isn’t much offered in New-Brunswick….

Any thoughts?

M

They have compatability charts. Was looking at one for my 6” Ridgid.

I have that, a Jet jointer and a Delta planer t hat both have Shelix heads. To be honest i though this was a great thing, but after 8 years or so it hasn’t been all that big a deal. I got several spare cutters with each, and have used only one (the planer, I chipped one during the install) of the 2 boxes I have. So while it seems like a good idea, don’t put your self out too much looking for matched cutters…it just isn’t that big a deal; at least in my experience. I think if you were a business and kept a lot pf spare parts on hand, it would be a good thing…for the hobbyist not so much.

The Shelix heads just plain work. I have the Dewalt 735 with Shelix head and it is great.
Most jointers will accept a Shelix upgrade, and will take the same inserts as your planer.
Check Holbren.com for a list of compatible jointers. Many brands are equipped with Shelix heads from the factory now.
