Topic tags/keywords: drill press

I have had a Jet floor model drill press for 10 years or so. It is Model JDP-17MF. It has been pretty good but lately I am not very happy with it.

I measured run out on a large drill bit and get about +/- 0.004” which is OK.

However, like many drill presses like this, the quill is loose. If I measure the run out of the quill only, I get +/- 0.013 with the quill not extended and +/- 0.025” with the quill extended 4”. You can see bits moving slightly when drilling.

So, what drill press has better or less quill slop. I do not need machine shop tolerances but want something better.

Does anyone have some suggestions and maybe some actual measurements. Currently, I am looking at the Nova DVR drill press.

There is nothing else comparable to this. Your other choice if you don’t like the fancy technology is the PM2800b

If you just want a drill press, and don’t want a fancy new toy, then people really like the new Jet 17” or the Delta. In my research.

But most prefer the older stuff. like a Powermatic 1150 or the like.

I do not think that cutting into my drill press to attempt to fix the quill slop is going to happen.

I have a Jet 17” drill press and the new one is different on the outside but the inside is very similar and will have the same type issues with quill slop.

i hear good reviews of the nova dvr drill presses but pretty pricey. but, i do see just as many positives about the jet you currently own …maybe try tuning up if you have’nt tried yet

it seems everytime i research into a drill press upgrade, shopsmith pops up. i’m not sure on the validity but might consider

Unfortunately, there is no way of tightening up the quill short of cutting into it in a major way as shown in the Instrucable mentioned above.

I have looked at the exploded diagram to see what can be done and do not see any adjustments. If someone knows something different about tuning it up, please let me know.

that’s a bummer for such nice press…just wear and tear possibly. i’ve been looking to replace my pos delta dp for a while now. lot of these newer ones look like junk, unless you’re ready to drop $k’s….hoping to find an old general, atlas or rockwell in good condition
