I have about 400 walnut pen blanks for sale. I have them cut at 3/4” by 3/4” by 5” and would like $3 a peice for them. They are kiln dried and shipping is free. Just PM me if you are interested in the blanks.

At $3 each, those blanks need to be something really special. “Normal” Walnut is very cheap. I’ve sold Walnut pen blanks for up to $7 each but they were crazy burl with extreme color and contrast. Post some photos.

It depends on what they look like. Do you have a photobucket account? If not, sign up for one and pm me if you need help posting the photos.

Eric.

at $3 each, that works out to $153.65/bdft(neglecting waste) for walnut. if you can get them sold, that’s a pretty healthy markup. good luck!

Photobucket not needed. Martin allows you to upload your pictures directly into your comments. Try it.

On average, I pay no more than $1 per blank. With Walnut being pretty cheap and pen blanks being small, a lot of penturners like me can get them for free as offcuts. You’ll be targeting penturners that don’t have the means to cut scraps into pen blanks. Not too big of a market I suspect. For more comparisons, WoodCraft sells 10 of them(walnut) for $10 (Item #127339), and there’s a WC in many big cities so shipping is mostly a nil. Just giving you something to compare, not trying to burst your bubble. Also do a search on ebay for walnut blanks.

I think you’d do ok with $5 for 10 blanks.

I really almost never feel good about buying pen blanks unless they are really spectacular. After all I throw out chunks of great wood that I’m too lazy too saw down so why spend so much money on such a tiny piece of wood which is usually waste otherwise the sellers would sell bigger pieces or perhaps NOT LOL Alistair

You’re right Alistair but that is how those big companies make their money.

Bent, Rance and others, I know you are accounting for waste but out of 1 BF, you can only get about 24 jumbo blanks, 5 1/8”x7/8”. 24x$3=$72 per BF. Yes, there will be a lot of waste but you can never have a “perfect” board for pen blanks. $1 per “plain” Walnut blank is fine for those that don’t have a band/table saw. No matter how careful you are, you could have a freak accident and you are risking your fingers or a hand.

Decent “normal” Walnut sells for up to $10 per BF, usually less. Burl, fiddleback or highly figured Walnut sells for $100 per BF or easily more. I know because I sell it every day. Gunstocks and guitar tops and backs draw top $$$.

For the show winning pen blanks, you need the best of the best and a very good finish. It takes time and a lot of work to produce top$$$ pen blanks. I find it funny that people will spend, $8, $20 or even $50 for a pen kit but don’t like to spend even $7 on a pen blank that will make for a stunning pen, even on a $1.50 slimline.

Just my 2cents as a wood seller and pen turner.

I would be happy to post photos of $5+ pen blanks I sell everyday and get your LJers input.

Give the dam things away and they pay the shipping after all it is only junk pieces to you.
That is what I did with my Birdseye maple and I made some members very happy.
Among friends here if you have something you don’t need give it away we are all family here.
