I am new to using a computer so i do apologise if this is totally in the wrong place.
I am trying to build a timber workshop in my back garden 7.5m x 5m i have a lot of old cast iron 3 phase woodworking machinery (415volts) but only have 240volt supply to my house. I am also looking advice on sound proofing the workshop as i live in semi detached house in a private housing estate in seaside town called donaghadee in northern Ireland.

Though I’m not sure how utilities in N. Ireland work I can tell you what would happen in the states…
The utility company, in Michigan at least, will not bring a 480v, 3 phase service to a residence. The only way to run that equipment is with different motors.
Sorry :(

I dont have 3 phase here on the utility poles, bloody shame but.

I put in a rotary phase converter and a transformer. It’s a bit of a PITA cause I have to switch on the transformer, followed by the phase converter every time I want to start a 3 phase piece of equipment but on the good side. I have the power to mow through wood.

Also, some of my 3 phase equipment (and I am no electrician, had to get a buddy over) is 208V, 415V, 550V and 600V…..........all over the map but “buddy” got them all working. Some of the tools are also 220V.

For sound proofing I didnt do much. 2×6 walls filled with pink and green insulation, plywood, typar, strapped and pine siding. On the inside on top of the VB, is 1/2” plywood and the ceiling is blown in insulation.

I have never had a neighbor complain and when the shops doors are closed…......you cant hear a peep wheh swimming in the pool.

In high fidelity sound stores, they make every wall a different size, angled remotely similar to a stealth jet. A double layer of drywall with strapping in between.

Ditto on the rotary phase converter/transformer setup. If you’ve got serviceable 3 phase tooling and the desire and the Euros to get it done, then by all means put those heavy machines to work, they’re hard to beat. As to sound deadening, I’d rip some lengths of oak and have a friend check the sound level around your environs while doing so. Good luck.

always,
