So i just built these shop cabinets. Figured I would sand em’ up to 220 and put a finish on them. I read in the forums to try 1/2 mineral spirits, 1/2 tongue oil. This is coat one. I really want a darker, richer look. The styles and rails are pine(might have been a bad idea), the cabinets carcass’s are 1) birch 2) maple ply. Should i keep heading down the path of mineral + tung or maybe just 100% tung? Any feedback appreciated. Just looking for a bit darker, a bit richer natural wood look. THX

Color wood with oil, poly etc. next thing you need to do is prep some more of the same wood, inlcuding the same tung oil mix put on the same way, so you can TEST BEFORE you do something else you dont like. The tung oil or varnish you already put on may preclude much absorption of color, so the intensity of the color may have to be hi to get much of anything. That,s what the test boards are for. There are other ways, tinting shellac or other spray on finish to add color.
