Table Saw blade alignment screws will not loosen

I finally found myself a used table saw and am getting it into working order but I’m stuck on the heeling adjustment because I cannot loosen the adjustment screws for the life of me.

The saw in question is a Ridgid TS2400-1. The guy I bought it from bought it a while back (I think these were current around 2006 or so. He got it when he bought a new house and only used it to fix up the house. Then it sat in his garage until I bought it. He said he never even changed the blade. Just used the one it came with. So I’m guessing he didn’t do any sort of alignment or adjusting. It’s in great shape. Almost looks new except that the orange Ridgid plastic turned more of a yellow-orange from sitting next to a window.

Anyways, my point is the saw is in great shape except that some of the nuts and screws have been super tough to get off probably from rust and just having never been turned. So now I can’t budge the alignment hex screws that allow me to heel the blade. My hex wrenches just bend when I try to turn them. I’m reluctant to go to more drastic measures because I don’t want to destroy anything.

Any tips on dealing with this would be super helpful because I really want to start using this thing.

Are these hex socket head screws? If so, there are a couple of ways to gain additional leverage. One is to get a hollow shaft nut driver and slip it over the hex wrench to give you a bit more torque. Put the short end on the screw, and the nut driver over the long end. If you don’t have a suitable nut driver, try to find a suitable piece of pipe or something similar to use. In a pinch, a pair of vice grips or pliers can be used. And I hate to suggest it as it’s a bit random, but a small open end wrench can sometimes be used in conjunction with the hex wrench, but on really stubborn screws, that usually just results in buggering up one or both of them :(

Another (and IMO better) way is to get a hex socket and use a 3/8” or 1/2” ratchet. If still stubborn, give it a few whacks with a plastic faced hammer or wood mallet. Don’t forget to give them a good dose or three of penetrating oil first.

is it possible that there is a locking nut on the hex screw that needs to be loosened first?

You could also cut off a hex wrench to maybe an inch or so in length, then mount it in your impact driver. Those develop lots of torque, and it may work. Oh, just realized, that would work only with a 1/4” wrench. If it’s a different size, you might be able to make it work with a socket adapter.

Got the alignment screws loosened finally but having difficulty getting the blade parallel to the miter slot. The blade is very difficult to adjust accurately. I have to put a ton of elbow grease to move one side and when it moves it jumps too far. Another problem is when I do any sort of tightening or loosening to the screws the blade is moving all over the place.

Now I find a few things online that might help that I will try this evening. First, the manual says to raise the blade as high as it goes but from what I’ve read on forums they say to back it off from the highest position which makes sense.

Another bit of advice that runs counter to the manual is to loosen 3 of the 4 screws and not all 4.

Almost all of the info online about Ridgid table saws refer to the the R4512. The R4512 is the successor to the TS2400-1 and they look almost identical, however, the location of the alignment screws are in different places. On my TS2400, they are on the top of the saw while on the R4512 they are underneath si it has been difficult to find a lot of info on the saw.

Hopefully, those two tips will get me going but if anyone else has advice on heeling I would appreciate it. This is the first adjustment I am doing on the saw, aside from leveling the insert with the table, and I know that the blade is not square with the table and I wonder if that has an effect on the heeling adjustment. Does it matter what order you do them in?
