I am in the market for a new bandsaw. I know there are lots of LJ’s with the 14” delux Rikon and I was initially looking at getting this one. I got the Grizzly catalog in the mail and they have 2 17” for around the same price. One of them is even cheaper, the Polar Bear Series one. I’m wondering if anyone has one of these from Grizzly or if anyone knows anything about their new polar bear series of tools.

thank you

I have thier 19 inch bandsaw and love it. BE sure you get more power than you currently need. You might need more in the future.

Rikon bandsaws are on sale at Woodcraft this month. $200/400 off.

I have the Grizz 17 inch x2. IIRC, when you go from the 513 to the x2, you get cast iron wheels ( instead of aluminum) bearing guides, and steel trunnion instead of aluminum. The Polar has aluminum wheels, euro guides, not sure about the trunnions

I have the Grizzly G513×2. Love it. I shouls have gotten it earlier, before I bought a craftsman. I still use the craftsman. I have the carter stableiser on it for doing tight curves. For the price difference it’s better than the polar bear series if you can afford it. If you are able to go to the Grizzly store, I would then you can see them side by side. I did that..

I have the Grizzly G0555 with the riser and I like it. I can resaw up to 12” with it and have. Yes a big motor is required to resaw that much. (12”) It generates so much dust that a dust collection system is necessary.

Like my Rikon 10-325 13” resaw. Rikon Tech support is top notch. Got banned from Grizzly, so won’t ever hear anything good from me about them. The couple things I got prior to banning weren’t anything to write home about.

I researched a lot of band saws. Ended up getting the Porter Cable 330BS from Lowe’s. This thing sings like a
swiss watch ! Tracking was perfect right out of the box. NO vibration what-so-ever ! I turned the saw around
on the base, because, to me, the door was on backwards. Now it opens front to back – like a door should. It
has a 16 inch table, not a “small” 14 like most other 14” band saws. Woodworkers was having a sale last
week end on Woodtek tools, and I picked up their fence – 10% off with a $10 discount – couldn’t pass that up.
Plus – this saw has 1 1/2 horse motor – so it should go through just about anything. I put it through it’s paces
with some 4×4 oak and maple – went through like “butta”.

While I don’t have their band saw, I do have a few Grizzly items in my shop. They have always been top notch. If you can come up with the $$, the grizzly 17” is a nice saw…

FineWoodworking winter 2010 Tools & Shops magazine just came out with a nice article on “serious bandsaws”.

They compared about eight, and they liked the Grizzly GO514X2B and the GO513X2B. I’ve got the GO513X2B on order. I liked the extreme heavy duty features compared to the polar bear series.

”What have ya done to be “banned” from a company?”

Will that question ever result in hearing BOTH sides of the story ?

On another forum, Shiraz (owner of Grizzly) participates.

The few times that somebody has gone on and on about being banned, and Shiraz has chimed in … the other side of the story convinced most of us that … the person being banned … probably earned it.

While I don’t know that the same thing is true, in this case, I stand by my first statement: you’ll only get one side of the story, so … what’s the point ?

Sincerely.
