Topic tags/keywords: precision straight edge taylor toolworks

Based on a number of posts from various LJ members, I looked on eBay at precision straight edges offered by Taylor Toolworks. I also found them on Amazon, and they have their own website store.

Their Amazon and eBay listings say that their 50” precision aluminum straight edge is straight to within 0.005” over the entire 50” length. “But their own website store says it is straight to within 0.003” over the entire 50 length.

Has anyone else noticed this?

That’s a stretch calling it a precision straight edge.Straight edge is more accurate.I have one from Lee Valley that looks the same.I also have four others that are steel and precision.
.003 .005 is not going to make much of a difference.

Precision is relative, not absolute. I am just curious if anyone else noticed this.

I could be wrong but I think I recall them offering a ~36” model too. I suspect it’s a .001 margin of error per 12” and the .003 vs .005 is a typo – perhaps a “copy/paste” error from the 36” model

I thought the same thing. But out of curiosity I emailed Taylor Toolworks last night. First thing this morning I received email from Dan of Taylor Toolworks who wrote, “Yes the 50” is Guaranteed straight to within 0.003” over the entire 50” length.”

What got me thinking about the level of precision initially is that the Veritas Aluminum Straightedges from Lee Valley are spec’d at within 0.003” straight over their entire length per the description on the Lee Valley website. Both the Lee Valley and the Taylor Toolworks aluminum straightedges have the same size/profile and figured they might even be sourced similarly. I don’t know about fit and finish.

I am thinking about ordering one for planer set-up.

I exchanged a few email with Dan of Taylor Toolworks during this past week. Today I finally ordered the 50” precision straightedge. When I asked Dan about the precision he said, “The box actually says .003 and we stand by that. The listings are a bit more conservative.”
