Good day all,
I was at my lumber dealer yesterday and came across an interesting piece of lumber. They had it listed as douglas fir and it was on sale for 2.22 B/F. The funny thing is that this board (2” x 8” x 10’) has an incredible figure which looks to be quilted or fiddleback. I have never seen Douglas Fir with any type of figure…is this possible or do you think it was labeled wrong? Either way, I heading down with the truck to pick up this little gem of a bargain.

Thanks for any replies.

I’ve got fir floors and they have some pretty funky figuring in spots. Post some pictures of it when you get it.

I’d like to see a picture. This should lead to a nice project.

Pine grain can run in weird directions at times and I wouldn’t be surprised that this board reflects that. Would make for a fragile grain pattern in a construction sense as it wouldn’t support weight, but as a panel or boxtop…might look real nice.

There’s another point to consider…It might be a choice piece of maple or oak that was mislabeled. Wouldn’t be a first for those big box stores who hire only the finest “know nuthin’ bout wood” types to stock their shelves.

A photo is a must though.

I have a piece that was supposed to be stair tread that has some serious curl in it. The problem is I can’t even look at it with a plane in my hand without it chipping out. Some day I’ll be good enough to tackle it until then it will just sit in the shop taunting me!! Good luck and always keep your eyes open for that wonderful piece of wood that no woodworker can let be nailed down and painted!!
