With the Porter Cable 15” PCB660DP discontinued, I can’t think of an alternative in that price range. There’s Wen (fake reviews?), and Harbor Freight, which I know too well. The HF 17” 43389 has gotten a decent reputation though.

Otherwise, nothing up to Jet $600 territory. Any ideas?

Have you checked Grizzly 17” @ $599. Vice HF it might be what you want.

Lowes is still selling the PC, they do have two listings for the same DP, one does say it’s discontinued the other says you can order it.

I have the PC, the WEN looks really similar. If the prices are close I think I would go for the WEN because of the slower speeds it is capable of and it’s easier to change the speed.

Hard to tell from the picture but the castings look better on the WEN too. And the table looks easier to clamp to till you make a proper table for it.

Check Tractor Supply. I think they still have some offerings.

It looks like there is just a new revision of the Porter Cable drill press, Lowes’ website show it in stock now as the “type 2”.

Yup. Mine was $399, so it was an easy decision for me.

I just found the PC on Lowe’s but only after selecting a different local store. Listed in stock for $379.

With a 10% coupon, it could still be the most reasonable option. I know people commonly have to fiddle with the chuck and arbor, the table is not designed for woodworking and the minimum speed of 300 is not what it should be, 250. How serious are these shortcomings?

Yeah, I’m not sure why that is with Lowes. Seems like with everything else you can order anything from their website and have it shipped to either your local store or your house, but not larger power tools.

But I do think the PC drill press is a great tool, I don’t think there is any other drill press in it’s price range with 4” of travel. I have had mine for a little over a year now and have had no troubles with it.

The two things I did change were replacing the handle knobs with some wood balls and I replaced the threaded rod on the depth stop with one without a scale on it. The original one worked ok, but if you had the speed nut rotated to where it’s threads and the flat on the depth rod were aligned it could slip.

Have your say...
