Hi Everyone,
Question why does this piece of pine I found at Lowes have all these little knots or eyes? I am not really sure what to call them. The whole board is covered with them and was curious what causes it.
Thanks,
Ed

An update….....

After looking around on the internet from what I can see it would be called pecky. This could be totaly wrong for the name. It does seem though that it is an effect caused by a fungus. Again I could be way off.
If anyone know I’d be interested to hear the input.
Thanks,
Ed

I have been told that it came from a forest fire area and those are actually burns.

Those little marks are small-branch incursions. The tree may have been in a forest fire area as Monte points out, and was trying really hard to survive. I have seen pine trees in North Georgia covered with little twigs after a controlled burn. I have also seen pine trees covered with these little twigs as a result of disease. But at any rate they are small-branch incursions. I like the look. Use the board as a door panel or something … call it bird’s eye pine  … LOL!

Very cool. Definitely a feature piece. Bird’s eye pine seems appropriate.

Thanks for the input.
The fire thing makes sense, I understand.
I briefly looked for other boards like that the day I stopped at Lowe’s but I did not dig through the pile to look for more. All the pieces were neatly stacked and this one kind of thrown to side like no one wanted it. I guess to some this looks ugly or out of place. I have gotten different opinions from people. I guess beauty is in eye of the beholder. Some need it built into a finished piece and then can see the uniqueness of such a piece.

I will have to go back and dig around. I don’t think it is one of their bigger sellers. This actually is a Pattern Stock Eastern White Pine Board from Lowe’s.
