Topic tags/keywords: hardware screws bolts shop organization clutter

I’m reorganizing and going through garage of all of my supplies and I recently completed my workbench. As I’m putting stuff back, I’m asking myself “Do I really need this?”. A majority of stuff that I ask myself that on is hardware, the bulk of which was left in my house when I purchased it or was acquired at auctions I attended where items were put together along with the actual item I wanted. Some stuff I had purchased myself for a project but haven’t had a need for it since. I know running to the store can be a pain and time consuming to buy something when I need it but so is rummaging through an assortment of somewhat organized screws, nuts, bolts, etc. I only live 15 min from a big box store and have a local hardware store in the town I live in. I’m thinking of just throwing away the “random” hardware that I haven’t ever used and just keeping the stuff I normally use or I have purchased myself and have it in the box showing sizes. What does everyone else do, keep a supply of those one off’s in addition to what you normally use or buy as you need?

I might have a little more than I need, but I’ve really worked hard at curing myself of the “I might could use that someday” types of purchases. If it’s a specialty item like the 2” carriage bolts I needed two of recently, I run down the street and get two. If it’s a more common item, I like to buy a box, rather than the little plastic bags like at Lowe’s and Home Depot, so I’ll have some around when needed.

If I need a screw or bolt I buy a box of them. I live less than a mile from my local Lowes and almost as close to my local Home Depot and I still have most every piece of hardware I use, at my disposa,l in my shop drawer. I found out, long ago, that I could spend more time hunting for an item, or a tool that I spend using it. Admittedly I am kinda’ new at all this. I have only been working with tools, full time, for over fifty seven years and counting. Just my opinion….I may be RIGHT!

Fasteners are getting more expensive. When I need a certain screw or bolt, I will buy a box of 100 from any industrial supplier. Buying them from a big box store, will cost you more than 5x. I buy flat washers by the pound; screws, nuts and bolts by the 100 ct box. I don’t use many nails.
