My wife wants a 24” lazy susan on the breakfast table. I have a round pine blank that is 24” diameter and 1” thick. My question is, will a 12” bearing work or should I go up to a 16”. The price goes up considerably but I’m wondering if the turntable will tip if a pot of beans is set close to the edge of it. (Please don’t assume I eat beans for breakfast; we eat all our meals there)

I plan on recessing the bearing into my blank 3/8” and attaching non skid feet to the bearing instead of having a wooden base.

That leaves about 6” around the perimeter that is not supported. I suppose something heavy would be a problem depending on its’ diameter.

not all lazy susan swivels are created equally but my guess is that your good to go.

i think so long as the bearing is properly secured, and your within the weight limits of the bearing, you will be fine.

i have a HP LaserJet 4v weighing ~50lbs on a 12” bearing on a 24×18 base and have never had any problems rotating it, or tipping issues.

you might ask, why a lazy susan printer? well then i don’t have to get off my ass to clear a paper jam!

I would recommend a base under the bearing rather than feet attached to the bearing. Then your bearing size would be fine. In fact you could get by with a smaller bearing. The key is in the size of the base below the bearing. If you add a base below the bearing, that is what you size big enough to hold the balance.

I just checked my Lazy Susan – is is 30 inches across with a 12 inch bearing. The base under the bearing is a plywood circle 23 inches in diameter. That leaves a 3 1/2 inch overhang. Never had any tipping issues.

An additional thought (inspired by Moron’s comment above). I went with a lower cost bearing – works OK, but there is one spot where it catches on a rough spot. Sometimes I think I should have gone for the better bearing. Depends on how much you are willing to pay, I guess.

And Michael, I think that’s a great idea. My printer is in a corner and it’s tough getting to the back for a jam.
