I have a Rikon 10” band saw and a Rikon 6” jointer. Admittedly, not the biggest tools in the shop, but I really like both tools and think they offer excellent value.
- I know the Rikon stuff is all made in China, or Tiawan, or some other Asian place, but so is Powermatic, Grizzly, Delta, Jet, Laguna, General Internationall, Central Machine, and just about any other company you can name. In fact, many of those brands are made in the same factory. If I can find an American made tool I usually will buy it, even at a premium price, within reasonable limits, but most of the time there is no choice.
- Since all band saws are imported, to me it’s just a matter of who will support it after I buy it. I bought my Rikon tools at Woodcrafter. I know they will support me and I drive by their store on the way to work 3 days a week.
- In this case, PowerMatic and Rikon are both sold by my supplier of choice, Woodcrafter, so the choice would be which is the best value. That would be Rikon.

By the way, this might get more comments if it was in the “woodworking tools and acessories” forum.

Rikkon is the new kid on the block.. so keep that in mind… whereas PM has been around since the 1900s..

But with that said, examine both carefully, inperson, if you can, then make your decision…

HAve you checked Grizzly? They have some decent deals, and said to be good(Not speaking from experience.. I havent gotten any Grizzly stuff.) http://www.grizzly.com/products/17-2-HP-Extreme-Series-Bandsaw-w-Cast-Iron-Trunnion-Brake-/G0513X2B (Its dual horse, 17”(smaller than the Rikon, but It makes up for it having a brake, which the Rikon doesnt, so it will still be “running” 5 minutes after shutdown…) and known for being extremely good… But it is about $50 more than the Rikon.. and lacks 1/2 a horse… BUt the brake adds safety..
