Topic tags/keywords: question

I just sold my first pen. It will only be the second one I’ve completed. I’ll post pictures in the projects at some point. A friend of my wife’s saw pen #1 that I made for her and commented about it. She thought it was an $80 pen (I wish I could sell them for that). Anyway, she wants to buy one for her dad for a birthday present. I’m trying to figure out which blank to use from the grab bag, But I also want to put a good refill in the pen instead of the one that comes with the kit. I’m using the cigar kit which states Parker style refill but when I look, Parker makes several styles. I can probably figure it out at the Staples but I’d like to hear from experienced pen makers which one is the best. I know this man and he has been kind enough to let my family stay at his mountain home and his beach home. Yes those are just vacation homes so I am sure this man knows how a quality pen should write. Any suggestions or links would be most appreciated.

Also any suggestions on selling more. I’m trying to pay off some debt and thought this might help.

Thanks

The Jotter style refill works as a substitute, but you should bring the original issued cartridge with you to be sure. I sold all the pens I made via word of mouth, but you might try etsy.com. I have seen other members here (Alin) who have posted work on the etsy site.

This is how you get started, word of mouth. Each pen is an advirtisement. Do the absolute best that you can and let your work speak. Don’t seek too much profit too soon. Put the time in and use quality parts.

“Put the time in and use quality parts.”

Is there a difference between the kits at places like woodcraft, penn state etc…(other than price) They look pretty much the same to me. I agree with you totally Mario. I’ve cut and glued up 8 blanks. I want to make sure I get this done right. Can you point me in the right direction for good quality parts?

As for profit, I won’t be making much if any on this one (considering the waste I will inevitabley produce until I get it just right). I was thinking around $20-$25 including some sort of case. Any suggestions on what to use as a gift box? I’ve seen a few at different places like Woodcraft. Also have seen the leather pouches. I kinda like that idea also. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I just realized that I probably need to get something like this just for the presentation and have no clue what to do. Don’t want to go the cheap plastic tube route, at least not on this one considering who is getting it.

I know too many questions?!? Main ones are:

Source for quality parts?

Source for case or other recommendation for presentation?

The pens that I make from Penn State Kits use Cross Pen refill kits.
