Topic tags/keywords: bandsaw question

I want to replace both tires on my old Craftsman Bandsaw model 113.243311. Picked up two today at Sears Parts. Came home, took the old top one off and, oh!, oh! the new one is much smaller than the old one. I verified the part number with the parts list and it was correct. Started trying to put the new one on the wheel thinking it must stretch enough cause Craftsman wouldn’t try to fool me. If they say it is the right one, then pull like mad and get it on. After a broken back, pinched fingers and out of Navy words like darn and golly gee, I surrender. The old tire has a diameter of about 18 1/2” and the new one is about 12 1/2”. Need to return and see what is wrong with part number, or keep pulling and it will stretch around the wheel, somehow. Is there a secret to putting a new tire on, beside getting the right size? Thanks, and I love this place.

You’ve got the wrong size. The new urathane tires require you to put them in very hot water with a drop or two of laundry soap. The tire needs to be in the water for 10 min or so. It makes the tire easier to stretch.

But again you’ve got the wrong tire.

I know for the aftermarket tires they say to place them into a bucket of really hot water for a few minutes first but I dont know if they will expand that much, but may be worth a shot.

Any suggestions on aftermarket tire sources?

I’ve just ran into the very same problem. Trying to correct the problem with Sears is a nightmare and they won’t let me wake up!

I soaked the tires like Karson and Frank suggested. It worked perfectly! The tires stretched on the wheel with a little elbow grease and I’m makin’ sawdust.

But I also agree with Bob #2. Sears is not an ideal woodworking tool place.
