Is the mineral oil sold as a laxitive the same stuff to use for a cutting board finish?

Think its work melting beeswax or parafin into?

Yepp, paraffin oil (mineral oil) is used as a laxative when taken in larger amounts. You can melt some bee-wax in the paraffin oil to get at bit more durable and water repellent surface. I like the feeling of wax-oil mixes personally.

Yep, double boiler to melt the wax.

Paraffin (solid), mineral oil (liquid) and naptha (flammable liquid) are all basically the same chemical. That is why naptha (aka white gas and is the basis for Coleman lantern fuel) is called “paraffin” in some countries and by some old timers in the US.

Melt the paraffin or bees wax in a double boiler and then mix in the mineral oil. Do not let it continue to heat, especially on an open flame stove, as you will get flammable fumes. Pour or brush it on while it is warm and liquid. Scrape off the excess (dull card scraper or butcher knife works) and buff out after it cools.

I have found that just soaking in the mineral oil, and then, after I get the wood saturated, wipe off the excess oil and just rubbing over the surface with a paraffin block and then buffing it out also works well. Not sure I get the same penetration as the melt/pour method with the paraffin.

I have been told that bees’ honey is one food stuff that will not spoil due to the anti-biotic properties of it. Does anyone know if those properties extend to the wax?

I work in in the lab. for food control. Wax and honey contents antibiotics. But sugar is real reason for long shelf life of honey. Our grannies used the sugar to preserve food for winter.

Yes Bogdan- sugar is a natural preservative. That’s why jelly works. :) And I make tons of jelly and use the sugar. Same for canning peaches/pears etc. Make a sugar/water mix and pour it over the fruit in the jars.

I don’t seem to preserve very well although I guzzle tons of suggar… It must be the quality.
